Osteopathy in Australia is a non invasive, manual therapy. The philosophy of Osteopathy was born in 1874 by Dr Andrew Taylor Still, a medical physician in the USA and has grown into a very popular and effective form of treatment.

Osteopaths use hands on techniques to provide symptomatic relief of your musculoskeletal pain. As an osteopath, we recognise your body’s structure and function are interrelated so adopt a holistic approach in assessing and addressing your pain.

There are four major principles that we follow as osteopaths:

  1. The body is a unit
  2. The structure and function of your body are reciprocally interrelated
  3. The body possesses self-regulatory mechanisms
  4. The body has the inherent capacity to defend itself and repair itself.

What is unique about Osteopathy is that we look beyond the site of pain to the surrounding joints and muscles that connect to or surround the problematic area. For example, if you presented with right knee pain, not only would we look at your right knee but also look at the left knee, your lower back, pelvic joints, both hips, ankles and your feet.

We not only treat your symptoms but we investigate to find the cause of the pain. Education is very important in how to best manage your pain in the short term and long term. A thorough and effective management plan in the short term may prevent the pain from returning in the future.

Osteopaths use a number of techniques ranging from soft tissue massage, joint articulation and/or manipulation to gentle stretching. We provide you with appropriate stretches and strengthening exercises as well as advice on your daily activities including postural advice, sleep position, pillow positioning, functional movements.
